Known around the shop as “Big D.” With over 25 machines in production, it is a daunting task to keep every machine in pristine working condition. For a task this challenging, Lyn-Tron hired a machinist with over 30 years of practical Davenport experience, Bill Reger.

Bill initially started his career in Arizona under the tutelage of another excellent machinist, Mike Thomas. Did we mention that Mike is the supervisor of the Davenport and Rotary Transfer departments here at Lyn-Tron? Lyn-Tron is dedicated to a superior product and excellent quality. In order to maintain this extremely high level of quality, it is necessary to remanufacture machines. This is often a time consuming process taking roughly 12 weeks to rebuild a Davenport machine from the ground up. It has to be noted that there is a difference between “rebuilt” and “fixed.” A “rebuilt” machine, pertaining to Davenports, might include; new bearings, cams, pumps, etc… As opposed to “fixed” which would pertain to addressing the issue that is the problem. In other words, fix what is broke. In Bill’s 6 years with Lyn-Tron he has rebuilt 7 Davenports to a quality that would be compared to an original machine manufactured years ago.

Standing 6′6″ Bill is a large man by societies standards. However, attention to detail and precision craftsmanship is not limited only to large Davenport machines. A treasure that found a home in the lobby of Lyn-Tron’s coroporate office is a watch lathe that Bill remanufactured in his spare time. This a fully function machine that is roughly the size of a small dog (review image below).

Keeping with Lyn-Tron’s vision of a superior product and excellent quality, we are honored to have a gem like Bill Reger. His knowledge has been able to keep our operating costs low which translates to lower costs for our customers.

Tyler spent the majority of his summer the best way anyone could. By choosing to be the I.T. Department’s Intern here at Lyn-Tron. Tyler started his internship at Lyn-Tron on July 15th and has spent the last 6 weeks enjoying the tutelage the I.T. Department has to offer. You might ask yourself what type of teenager about to start his high school career would want to sacrifice their precious summer coming to work with there MOM? I’ll tell you a kid with tremendous potential in the computer science field. He’s dedication to come in and sacrifice his summer at a young age says a lot about his character, I was surprised to see him after two weeks. Tyler displayed a natural problem solving desire and patience which are the biggest parts in becoming a computer scientist. Tyler first was in charge of editing some of our internal CAD tutorial videos. After a couple of weeks of doing HTML, CSS, and JavaScript tutorials we gave him the job to help revamp our login, and create account page on our website. Tyler will be starting at Shadle Highschool next week were he will continue his education in computer science by taking some of the computer programing classes that they offer. Tyler knew at a very young age that he wanted to be involved in computers. After being exposed to his first video game he knew he wanted to be a game designer. He already knows he wants to attend Full Sail University after Highschool, a university that has produced many 3d artist and video game designers that are the leading the industry today. Here at Lyn-Tron we were very proud to have Tyler join us and we know he will succeed in any career he chooses.

In October, 2009 Tom took on the role of Director of Outside Sales which included 10 states and all of Canada. Since Tom started his new position he has grown his territory over 200% in sales and his numbers continue to climb. The greatest part about Tom’s increase is not the large orders that he has brought to the table, but it is the growth of existing business that has made the largest difference. Tom’s dedication to his work and his dedication to complete customer satisfaction has brought more return customers and more repeat business than we had previously seen in any of these territories.

Tom spends about 1-2 weeks every month traveling around to all the different states he governs. He plans out time for Distributors and OEM accounts and visist everyone he possibily can. Tom is one of the most memorable persons Lyn-Tron has ever employed. Tom is exceptional at visiting a customer and planting the fresh idea of looking to Lyn-Tron for their hardware needs. It comes as no surprise that within days of Tom’s visit, that customer puts in an order here at Lyn-Tron.

Tom never loses contact with anyone in his territory and knows each account personally. Tom can close any deal, whether it’s by phone or a personal call. He is able to provide customers the complete information on any part and understands how to answer any question they might have. In May of this year, Tom had the most sales of any Representatives within our organization. A climb like this has never been done before in Lyn-Tron’s history. He has been such a great part of our continued success and we are grateful to count Tom Vidmar as one of our own. We look forward to having Tom for another 15 years, because we know that he will always be dedicated to serving the needs of our customers through total customer satisfaction.

Ryan is currently a senior attending Eastern Washington University were he will be graduating through the Manufacturing Technology program. Ryan will be starting his internship on Monday June 27th, it will last until September 9th. Here at Lyn-Tron we are very excited to have Ryan join us. Ryan will be on a three day a week schedule that will be Monday, Wednesday, Friday on each day he will be in a different department. On Monday’s Ryan will be in the CNC Department to get an understanding of what the Machinist do and how the whole department runs. Wednesdays, he will be in the Quality Control Department learning what our inspector’s look for that ensures our loyal customers always receive a quality product. On Friday’s, he will be in the CAD Department and work with one of our CAD Specialist going through a tutorial. Here at Lyn-Tron we are always looking for ways to help our Community and we are very delighted to welcome Ryan Nadeau.

In order to ensure this we at Lyn-Tron have created a new procedure that will do just that. This new procedure is a stand that Lyn-Tron is taking to ensure complete RoHS compliant materials. We have decided to send all of our incoming raw material to an independent lab for a destructive test to ensure that the material we use to manufacture products are RoHS compliant and not rely on the raw material mill certification. The procedure for this testing starts when raw material arrives by truck at our facility. The material is inspected for diameter, flatness, surface smoothness and any surface cracking or stress. The material is identified by the mill’s heat number and lot number, this data is kept on file and the original material cert is scanned into our quality system. Several bars are cut into 6″ pieces and sent along with a copy of the material cert to the lab for testing. The material is then placed in a controlled quarantine area until lab test confirm the chemical analysis and RoHS compliance has been verified.

At the lab, how they actually do the test is quite interesting. First is the the cut bars are received at the lab, the material is placed in a large crucible, then melted down to a liquid. At this point, the hot aluminum liquid is poured into a cast which turns this liquid back into a solid 2 and half round puck. This puck is then cooled and taken into a lathe and one side of the surface of the puck is turned down in order to have an even smooth surface adequate for testing. Next the pucks are then stamped with a serial number, heat and lot number prior to the actual testing. Finally the pucks are placed into an ARL 4460 Optical Emission Spectrometer and the results are printed out and show a completer chemical analysis of the material. An additional puck is sent back to us at Lyn-Tron along with the chemical analysis which is then kept for a period of three years. The Chemical analysis data is then entered into our quality system through software that has been developed by our IT department so that we can track every item we manufacture with that certain material and easily find the analysis if needed.

This new procedure provide a means of traceability which goes far beyond relying on the mills material certification. The ultimate goal is simply to guarantee our loyal customers that we have done everything in our power to ensure that our products are RoHS compliant. I went looking and I recently read an article that I would like to share with you. The article is titled “Made in the USA” by Jeff Jacoby. In the article Jeff takes a closer look at the misconception about how every product is made in China. I will bet that sentence got your attention. “Misconception” you say. According to the article, while it is true that many jobs are moving to China there is an exaggeration to this statement. Jeff states in the article that American surpasses China by nearly 46 % output revenue.  But where are these American manufacturing jobs. I don’t know about you but every time I go to the store to get a toy for my nephews they always say made in china. So if the USA is not making the toys that I buy for my nephews or the blender that I have put in to my kitchen then what are we making? How about the fighter jets that our military flies, or the air conditioner that we use to cool our houses. Automobiles and pharmaceuticals, industrial lathes and semiconductors. How may of those have you bought and put in your living room recently? So while China tend to specialize in the low-tech, labor-intensive goods just remember that the USA is making the pharmaceuticals that hospitals use to help us when we are sick.

What else I find interesting is in the article is the fact that in 19 years the he talks about, 1990 to 2009 is the out put in that same time period only changed from 21 % in 1990 to 20% in 2009. And more over than that is the fact that we still make more “stuff” than Japan, German, British and Italy – combine.
